The G28 is the DMR rifle that the German Bundeswehr is going to equip. It is the military version of the MR308 and can only fire semi-automatically. In fact, as early as 2009, the German army had already formulated a plan called the G27, intending to use a new DMR rifle to replace the current G3. In 2010, there were rumors that the HK417 withdrew from the G27 competition because of its poor accuracy. At that time, the G27 project was competing between the SIG SAPR and the Oberland Arms' OA-10 SASS, which was a gas-blown AR that used the G3 magazine. However, in 2011, the German army suddenly announced that the civilian version of the HK417 , the MR308, was selected as the G28 and became the German army's DMR rifle, so the G27 project was cancelled. Here, one has to sigh at the public relations ability of HK .

However, strangely, in 2015, someone posted a few photos of a fully automatic HK417 claiming that it was the G27 equipped by the German army. In addition, it is said that the GSG-9 is equipped with a 13-inch HK417A2 called the G27K.

The G28 was initially released with a long handguard, but perhaps it was too heavy, so a model with a shorter handguard, called the Patrol, was later released.

The G28 exhibited at SHOT SHOW 2014 has been given the export version with the suffix "E" as per HK's custom. However, there is no obvious difference between the G28 and G28E.
